There may be pad midi controllers hitting your price point in the BF sales. From memory I think the Akai MPD218 did last year. It's a great wee unit, and the free MPC Beats software is decent.

also sold as the lekato emp16, looks a WHOLE lot like a 1/2 akai mpd232 w/16-step sequencer instead of 32. on-pad midi editing like 226 & 232, cheaper than a new mpd218. pretty decent if you need smth w/more features than tiny mpd/launchpad but don't want to spring for the apc64 or launchpad pro mk3

The general purpose pads and knobs only MPD218 is ~¥12,000 but the FGDP-30 is ~¥25,000 for a drum instrument. I can see how in the FGDP-30 the extra wide snare and kick pads is useful. On the MPD218 you assign more pads to the same sound instead.

I've been reading The Breakbeat Bible to get some ideas on programming new beats to work with. I've got to say, it's also got me wanting to practice finger drumming again on the MPD218. I'm not particularly good at it but it gives a more visceral understanding of the beat itself.

Picked up an MPD218 half price to help me with drum tracks that I'm not quite sure how to program in using with Koala but like, I have no idea what I should assign the knobs to.

i've been using linux for decades at home. i don't use "office" apps at home, sothe only thing i ever need g8zos for is to do my taxes so i run a billybox in a qemu vm for that, once a year.
i also use wine to run the akai mpd218 pad controller app.
