#MTPE
a enorme safadeza que é te pagarem pra fazer uma revisão, aí você vai ver e a tradução é de máquina. nem pra pagar mtpe

When translators say they hate doing MTPE because it's faster to just do it from scratch and results in better material, we're not exaggerating. If I was a proofreader and a translator handed me this, I would immediately tell the PM to fire them. No translation is genuinely better than an MT in loc.
Unsurprisingly it looks real bad

OH, Look! Another game translated by magic!

This right here is quite dangerous in these times. Why? By erasing us translators from our jobs it makes it easier to replace us with GenAI.

We've always been invisible. That gave them a leverage in introducing MTPE and lowering our rates.
Nioh 3, developed by Koei Tecmo and localized in 11 languages, does NOT feature any #TranslatorsInTheCredits. A few members of Localization staff are included in the LQA credits, but none of the actual translators are credited. Source: GamersPrey

i cant imagine how bad an MTPE translation of a game like segagaga where every single line is buried in layers of deep otaku references is but im not about to self harm by playing it to check
February 27, 2026 at 11:56 PM
I will not mince words: Segagaga is a deeply personal, human game about passionate developers making the best of a bad situation. This is not the first patch to employ MTPE as a shortcut, but it is particularly tone deaf to deploy in this climate for a game about the people who made Sega what it is.

Now this is some extremely cool news that other countries should be looking into for immediate implementation as well. Machine translation post-editing (MTPE) is a mark of shame that publishers should rightfully have to display as a warning to any potential customers.

Also, why call it MTPE when we can call it TRANSLATION'T.

THAT is the problem with "better than nothing". MTPE fan TL is worse than nothing. It's actively detrimental to the games supposedly being translated and the community at large.

It makes players associate the game with slop.

It forestalls good-faith translations.

It wastes everyone's time.

Client: "How many days do you need to translate 35k words as MTPE?"

Me: "Just as many days as translating it without MTPE."

Sorry, I don't do "quick fixes".

The point of a fan TL is to give others access to media they wouldn't otherwise be able to appreciate. If it won't reach people, your efforts are better spent elsewhere.

The existence of this MTPE slop translation is actively disincentivizing all potential serious translation efforts in the future.

MTPE (machine translation w/ post-edit) is just another tool of people who think this way. They don't know and have no way of knowing if their TL is accurate. They stubbornly insist generative algorithms produce reliable work that just needs a little spitshine, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Appreciate that this touches on how awful MTPE (machine translation post-editing) is, and glad that there are still some companies who refuse to use it.

Also, reminder that contractors are far more likely to get shafted in the credits, either being reduced to a company name or nothing at all.
