If an academy or war college can order this, they could order cadets be taught the germ theory of disease is wrong or aliens built the pyramids, and not told anyone disagrees.

Dropping courses on meteorology is one thing, forcing professors to knowingly lie about their field to students is another
From the suit by former West Point climate science prof Kalkstein, allegedly USMA leaders threatened to dissolve an entire department if the civil servant facult members contacted their members of Congress about the speech restrictions.

@michaelrlowry.bsky.social had an excellent post today about another incredible success for AI modeling with Isaias - and we may look back on the forecast for this hurricane as a watershed moment when AI forecast approaches fully entered the mainstream.

I recently gave an old atmospheric physics project I started back in 2020 a major update.

30 years ago today, I gave my first seminar ever... I was also just beginning my junior year of college, majoring in physics and astronomy.
I had zero classes or formal education involving meteorology or atmospheric science. This was just an interest.

@solsetur majestic, thanks for sharing. that flavor of seismology really fits into geophysics, since, just like old meteorology, it seems to hinge on hand waving and confidence.
this thing could have been made for shits and giggles by a physicist in 2025, it's beautiful.

Both of us were meteorology majors who didn't have the chops for math. So 2? years ago I asked him how the heck he pulled off the Charleston Weather thing, and he gave me this massive pile of resources to learn how to weather.

Also, he and Blair are the ones who got me using my mantra, #hunkerdown.

I don't think anything I say would do it all justice, so I'll just say I'm really going to miss you, @jaredwsmith.com. I still have the huge stack of meteorology self-education materials you gave me a few years ago.

Thanks for being such a cool, kind friend over the last 18 years. Rest in peace.

I guess but all the meteorology agencies use millibars when maybe centibars would have made more sense. Then again these are the people who have standardized use of decameters in their work.

Oh heck, I made the mistake of trying meteorology next thinking it would be better.

It was not. XD

I feel your pain, it really sucks to find that out.

Oh yeah. This was my problem with meteorology. Thought whether patterns and storms and storm chasing was the coolest thing. Then, yeah. Math. 😒

Glad I'm not the only one who ran into that.

Straight out of a meteorology textbook. Super Storm Slams #Iceland with wind gusts over 100 mph and a pressure of 930mb - equivalent to a Major #Hurricane! It has a classic comma head. The #storm is hitting Northern #Europe now.
