We believe many neuro problems associated with #COVID come from the virus hijacking blood vessels to gain access to the brain. This is what it looks like for me, using super-resolution microscopy.
With thanks to @harryspoelstra.bsky.social, combining vascular and neuro to understand #NeuroCovid 💪

some great starter packs for the #glia, #astrocyte, #oligodendrocyte, #microglia, #neuro researcher: gliasky, astrocytesky, microglia
But if you also like interactions between celltypes, please help this starter pack get started. Maybe someone can connect all of us in a feed?

I like microglia and I like electron microscopy. Today my new review on microglia ultrastructure came out on Open Biology.

I tried to do a guide I wish I had on my PhD. Thankful for all the people that have taught me microglia EM

Testing some new antibodies to identify oligodendrocytes 🟣, for me, the most difficult one to target in brain microscopy! Here I was able to identify its nuclei (oligo2 marker), not the whole cell body like neurons 🟡or microglia 🔵. Still, you can see oligos are everywhere! #Neuroscience #Microscopy

Most assume implants fail slowly over months. The moment an electrode enters the brain, microglia rush toward it within seconds, like fingers reaching for a splinter. Blood vessels leak. The BBB breaks. Inflammation starts instantly.

Astrocyte-microglia crosstalk through Hevin and Toll-like receptor signaling controls developmental thalamocortical synapse refinement

How does a brain with #Alzheimer look in the microscope? Neurons are dying, and I literally see holes in the tissue, like below. You can see microglia (🟡), brain immune cells, accumulating where the tissue disappears (hippocampus & entorhinal cortex). Additional markers: Astrocyte(🟣), pTau(🔵). 🧠🔬

How does #neuroinflammation trigger depressive-like behaviors?

Researchers in #ScienceSignaling show that #Orai1 sustains production of proinflammatory cytokines from microglia and that Orai1-deficient mice display less pronounced depressive-like behaviors. https://scim.ag/4rmJSZQ
Microglial reactivity and neuroinflammation-driven changes in motivational behaviors are regulated by Orai1 calcium channels
The Ca2+ channel Orai1 in microglia links systemic inflammation to depressive-like behaviors in mice.

#MicroscopyMonday is very much alive here and I'm loving it! My take for this week is Neuroinflammation! Under a microscope literally looks like the brain is on fire! 🔥🔬 Instead of gently touching the neurons, microglia changes shape, gets activated and start attacking them. How do we control this?

A calcium channel named Orai1 present in immune cells called #microglia may explain how neuroinflammation can induce depressive-like behaviors, according to new experiments in mice published in #ScienceSignaling. https://scim.ag/4rmJSZQ

This is important in two ways.

1. COVID looks like any severe viral infection vs having atypical brain injury behavior.
2. Mechanism for how viral infections accelerate brain aging by IL action on microglia mitochondria
The data argues against a primarily neurotropic spread of SARS-CoV-2, in line with most neuropathological findings. It suggests systemic inflammation, possibly worsened by chronic inflammatory comorbidities, promote the risk of poor clinical outcome in COVID-19 cases.
