Carolina mantis. So nice to see a native mantid in my yard rather than an invasive one. #orchidimagesphotography #photography #nativeinsects

This empress is also known as the Giant Valanga, or Hedge Grasshopper.

Unlike her swarming cousins, the locust, she chooses a solitary existence only gathering when conditions prove most favourable.

She can produce an egg pod containing up to 150 eggs!

I love finding and discovering new things with my nature app. Plus I get some really nice photos of the flora and fauna in my backyard. #gardening #garden 🌱 #milkweed #redmilkweedbeetle #nativeplants #nativeinsects #learning #gardener

Darwin and so many other people have had a hypnotic fascination with beetles. Look, I get it, I totally get it. Common green June beetle, Washington Avenue Green, Philadelphia. #beetles #nativeinsects

Spotted this amazing little snow scorpionfly while out photographing lichens in Zion National Park.

They are mainly active in the winter months and have really neat cold-weather adaptations.

Beaked Twig Gall Wasps (Burnettweldia plumbella) form galls on several California oaks—including blue, leather, Muller’s, and scrub oaks. Adult wasps are tiny, just 3 to 4 mm long!

A very welcome visitor!

I saw our first monarch arrive just a couple days ago but couldn't get a clear photo then

Today while I roamed my garden the female catbird meowed at me. She has three nestlings (there could be more but she is an expert at building concealed nests). None of my pictures are clear and I happily blame her and her beautiful distractions. #nativeplants #nativeinsects
