#Naturalising
Probably. And I wouldn't exist as my Grandma would have been sent back to Germany right after WW2 and wouldn't have been able to become a British citizen.

[Rather than naturalising in 1946 after 12 years of residency & marriage to a British citizen]

Naturalising into .... everything this year.... felt very complicated. Not today! Feels fantastic today!!!! 🩵

Do you think the US is exceptional in naturalising and accepting new citizens? Buddy, it is uniquely BAD at it. I'm saying this as an Australian.

I see fleeing and naturalising in this man’s future. Better start sucking up to the new boss now.

5. Some former Remainers have become disillusioned with Britain. After emigrating, naturalising elsewhere or losing faith in UK politics, they may no longer care about rejoining—or doubt Britain deserves another chance.

I also think it is very important for any progressive project to be able to distinguish what a technology does with what capitalism does. Otherwise you're just naturalising capital, which only serves the current ruling class.

OK, fine - but if since the 80s gender roles have moved from being regarded as behaviours to being widely considered innate, immutable characteristics, how can your first post in this thread be correct? If anything, by naturalising behaviors we have hardened gender norms, not loosened them.

I've never been a fan of the stages framing, it's a way of naturalising (and in therapy, I guess, supporting) a particular outcome that should very much not be naturalised here

The 1st intuition is that you can't become English in one generation. The 2nd is that the location of your birth does not make you English. The 3rd is that going through the educational system end to end is a big factor in naturalising to the point where one is English. These aren't arguments yet!

English? Or British and born in England?

I’ve always wondered why foreigners naturalising in the UK don’t get labelled English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish like those of us born here do.

I used to live in the EU, am naturalising and think Brexit was an act of colossal self-harm. The FBPErs and their casual racism coupled with a desire to see Britain punished harder drive me nuts.

God they're amazing. I think I need to do CR at some point but idk if anyone in my family will be as into the idea of a holiday where the two main activities are swimming and naturalising

i am open to being convinced otherwise, but i'm simply not seeing the benefits of naturalising computational analogy in bio even then (unless we're talking solely about how the new metaphor got us past rank behaviorism which is also a metaphor...)

The things that stopped it might have been:

1. Rules that prohibit dual citizenship (or on retaining it when absent)

2. impose specific conditions on those naturalising.

3. Insufficient qualifying years of presence.

Or "naturalising"

We can go further as we only want positive integers, so are naturalising the denominator.

Fwiw I use realise for complex cases too

Spain is especially egregious at naturalising players. They have now started to naturalise underage players who are playing in Spain, because if you change nationalities before the age of 16 then you don't count as naturalised.

This is deliberate - it’s to deter people from naturalising

..naturalising a social hierarchy — which I am far from blind to! But DEI does not resolve this, because it can be repurposed for white racist ends by liberals and reactionaries (as we are now seeing). Only a radical socialisation of the economy can bring progress.

Innivation studies is often guilty of naturalising technological change by taking in evolutionary terms. We need to stop it. Remember, innovators WANT credit. They WANT agency. Let’s give them some.
Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋

AI is not “evolving” on its own.

*People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it.

Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.
OpenAI’s top scientist, in a blog post on Sunday, warns that artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly that it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to understand and control it.

Here is the post:

And a couple of small excerpts--clear warnings.
