🚀 NumPy in the browser just got faster.

Emscripten-forge NumPy now uses OpenBLAS, bringing significant speedups to linear algebra, including matrix multiplication. Upcoming WASM SIMD kernels will improve performance further.

The is cool: "The Emscripten-forge #NumPy package now links #OpenBLAS in #WebAssembly"/#WASM

This was made possible thanks to @gws.phd's work on #WebR (webr.sh) where he successfully managed to port the Fortran toolchain, which #RStats relies heavily on, to #WASM

Somebody should throw some serious money into OpenBLAS. It has become the de-facto standard in Python numerical libraries and it needs some love. Specifically in the multithreading area, where its performance can be a bit nonlinear.

🤬 why does everything pass locally on macOS but CI (Linux) decides my cubic’s 3rd derivative is 24.0000001999 instead of 24?!

Apparently OpenBLAS and Apple’s Accelerate don’t round the same way 🤦‍♀️

And maybe also money to solve the duplicated OpenBLAS libraries issues in #Numpy + #Scipy Each library ships their own copy, built with different flags, and they interfere with each other when using threads. It is causing stupid performance issues in our SeeMPS library.

We ship OpenBLAS, but LBT allows us to change blases (blasi?) at runtime which is really convenient for benchmarking

Yeah, same goes from Julia, where a big part of the speed difference is just that Julia comes with OpenBLAS while R requires the user to manually install it.

Are there any posts about how OpenBLAS really absolutely was the big bang moment for what is now the explosion of python and data science and the way we see the world running so much AI and ML all came from that shit getting released and unseating the intel kernel math library
October 26, 2025 at 4:42 AM
Now I'd say OpenBLAS, because it's open source and it's pretty consistent across vendors and architectures, with reasonably good performance.
