#Opisthokonts
Care for your fellow opisthokonts.
IMPORTANT: When transporting a giant puffball mushroom you have recently foraged, it is absolutely crucial that you ensure the mushroom is firmly strapped into the passenger seat of your car to guard against sharp braking and potential whiplash.

Cellularization flips the switch between multinucleate and multicellular states, and at least in opisthokonts, the group that includes animals and fungi, the toolkit + recipe are conserved.

Septins underwent extensive diversification in the Opisthokonts, particularly fungi and animals where hetero-oligomer formation defines their mechanism, but this is distinct from Archaeplastida & Chromista. Amazing evolutionary story. Amazing evolutionary story. @mcmomany.bsky.social #SeptSRC

I think I can say that I'm a vegetarian who tries to avoid eating macroscopic opisthokonts. (There's no real escaping the microscopic ones.)

NEW Publication!!😄

Phylogenomic analysis of Opisthokonta (#animals, #fungi, & relatives) reveals a largely robust #phylogeny, but uncovers orthology inference methods as a major contributor of #incongruence. This study provides a robust framework for studying the #Opisthokonts

How do plant kinesins work at the single-molecule level?

We break it all down in our new review "Plant kinesins: a bottom-up approach - from single molecules to function" published in JXB @jxbotany.bsky.social 🎉

Check it out: doi.org/10.1093/jxb/...

Plant kinesins: a bottom-up approach – from single molecules to function
Abstract. During land colonisation, plants evolved new microtubule structures that have no functional analogues in opisthokonts, namely animals and fungi.

Animals and fungi are now grouped in a clade (a group of organisms with a common ancestor) called the opisthokonts. Here is a nontechnical discussion of why the animal and fungal kingdoms are in the same clade.
Three Reasons Fungi Are Not Plants | ASM.org
Fungi are more closely related to us than they are to plants. Yet, fungi have been grouped with plants historically, with an impact felt even today.

Parasol fungus next to a Stinging Nettle & human index finger for scale. Note that the fungus is more closely related to the finger than to the plant as both are members of the clade of Opisthokonts (a word hitherto unused in Bluesky?) 😲.

!NEW Preprint!

The evolutionary relationships among animals, fungi, and their unicellular relatives—the Opisthokonts—remain contentious.

We generated a taxon- and gene-rich dataset to determine why, moving us closer toward the phylogenomic resolution of Opisthokonts.

did you know that the opisthokonts are named from the ancient greek ὀπίσθιος (opísthios) 'rear, posterior', and κοντός (kontós) 'pole?

so i'm feeling opisthokontic now. need me some posterior pole.

i hunger. oozing down the hall in search of sustenance.
