does anyone trust polls to be close to outcomes? i find them interesting but do not think the final tally will necessarily look like what polls foretold when voting rights have been eroded & gerrymandering has such a huge impact on our election outcomes.

One thing about our polling obsession is that they are really genuinely useful tools for something other than *predicting election outcomes.*. As a measure of “public opinion” as amorphous and dynamic as that is, they really do give us crucial insight. But we want them to tell the future.
