NHS staff in England will now face immediate suspension if they are suspected of inappropriately accessing patient medical records, following a Sky News investigation that uncovered thousands of breaches of patient trust. NHS Chief Executive Sir Jim Mackey has written to hospital trust leaders instructing them to implement the new zero-tolerance approach, stating that too many cases of staff abusing patient confidentiality have come to light and that 'enough is enough'. The crackdown comes after evidence emerged of healthcare workers viewing the records of family members, friends, former partners and even victims of high-profile crimes without any legitimate clinical reason. In one case, a consultant accessed the health records of a woman who had begun a relationship with his former boyfriend. In another, at least five staff members at Southmead Hospital in Bristol accessed the records of Oliver McGowan, a young man with autism who died in 2016, prompting his mother Paula McGowan to call for meaningful action alongside the NHS's stated commitment to protecting patient privacy. Under the new rules, any member of staff suspected of 'snooping' will be suspended with immediate effect while an investigation takes place. Those found guilty could face dismissal, referral to professional regulators such as the General Medical Council, and even criminal prosecution, as unlawful access to patient data is a breach of the law. The NHS already maintains audit trails on its IT systems to record who accesses each patient record and when, and these logs are now being used more rigorously to detect and deter unauthorised access. The policy forms part of a wider campaign to remind NHS employees that having technical access to a record does not equate to having a legitimate need to view it. Sir Jim Mackey emphasised that patients must be able to trust that their personal and sensitive health information remains confidential, and that any breach of that trust undermines the relationship between the public and the health service. The move has been welcomed by patient advocates, who argue that medical records contain deeply private information and that unauthorised access represents a significant violation that must carry serious consequences.
