I’ve got 2 of them. Never thought I’d own a soldering iron with an OPERATING SYSTEM on it but they’re excellent little things. Pity I can’t say the same about the PinePower PSU but they have their uses too, as long as you don’t want to power a Pinecil with one.

PINE64 has warned of a "shocking" bug in its PinePower Desktop V2 USB power supply — but, thankfully, it's only relating to the display, rather than provision, of power.
I mean, PinePower is excellent, it’s just that the two I have refuse to negotiate with the Pinecils, and I’m using an ‘official’ pine usb cable too. Ended up with a Maplin PSU which I bought purely for the name 😄

The PinePower Desktop comes with a three-prong plug and has the USB-C shielding referenced to mains earth for that reason. Pinecil is not uniquely affected by such a problem in USB-C soldering irons, it's just the only one where the manufacturer allows you to solve it.

The PinePower V2 is a 165W desktop power supply with a lot of features... but the current batch of units has an unfixable error that displays 0V output when charging under some circumstances. It'll be fixed in the next batch. social.treehouse.systems/@pine64/1165...

Yeah my PinePower (presumably the v2, has the wireless charging pad on top) works great with it. That's actually my primary usb pd charger quite often, though I usually have the Pinecil on a barrel plug at my workbench since that delivers slightly more juice.

The old (v1) PinePower Desktop has had those issues too, also Pinecil randomly rebooting during soldering, esp. when you touch the tip to something. Shorting the PSU output GND to AC ground (earth) has reduced/eliminated those crashed in at least one case. I have no fucking clue how that works tbqh

In other recent tech news from around the web, a crowdfunding project is underway for a WiFi router with a RISC-V processor and fork of the open source OpenWrt operating system, M5Stack has launched a new dev kit with a 4 inch E Ink Spectra 6 color display, GEEKOM has given one of its mini PCs a modest spec bump for 2026, and Pine64 is warning folks about an error in a batch of its PinePower power supplies.

Charging via USB-C PD port is inconsistent, it first tries like 8V (wtf), and then either drops to 5V1A (couldn't reproduce in the video though), or goes to 9.5V@2.9A (~30W). The other USB-A ports all settle at 5V2A (~10W).

@cynical13 I have two #pinetime smartwatches. One died after a year or so, one after one week (!). To this day, @pine64eu ghosts these warranty cases. We also had to trash a now broken #PinePower USB charging station. My #pinephone is still working though. But the quality is pretty subpar.

actually i am not sure i was zapped with 5vdc it literally could be anywhere from 5-20vdc because usb c power delivery i should use my pinepower to see what the voltage is when my lightning connector is on my bed exposed and i move my arm just to get the skin underneath my arm zapped
