In some states, the right to an appointed attorney, "if you cannot afford" one, made famous by the Miranda warning, is not guaranteed for misdemeanor charges, even when the defendant ends up serving their sentence in prison or jail.

Federal judges may sentence someone based on alleged conduct related to uncharged crimes and crimes for which the jury returned a not guilty verdict. See US v Watts (1997).

Once more, with feeling:

The evidence is plain - and was predicted - that Medicaid work requirements have little effect on labor outcomes and instead have as their primary effects disenrollment (or, in this case, preventing enrollment altogether).
