#SNAI1
Wait so SNAI1 is written as "snail" (because obviously it looks so similar) but SNAI2 doesn't look like a word so they just refer to it as "slug"??

I love how "Snai1/2 (snail family transcriptional repressor 1/2)" implies we'd be snails if it were accidentally inactive. Besides likely not being viable, I wonder what would actually happen... Biology is wild.

Authors of the review are neural crest (NC) researchers.
They are very clear that snai1/2,..are NEURAL CREST but not 'mesenchymal specifiers'.
They still think NC migration is the consequence of EMT because of Snai1/2..are 'EMT markers'
Awesome.

Impact of EMT is profound
EMT research reminds one of Pavlov's conditioned reflex effect
Once symbols like TWIST1/SNAI1/2..are seen/heard, the tempting EMT stuff immediately comes to mind, &becomes totally immune to the knowledge of (neuro)developmental roles of these factors
July 12, 2026 at 7:42 AM
Explaining the behavior of neural crest cells using EMT might be the weirdest thing in biology😘

Why?

They say that NCCs express EMT factors TWIST1/SNAI1/2... But these are NCC markers/specifiers.

Sounds like the birds behave like a pig because they grow feathers😉

Very cool! Can you elaborate on what genes are associated with EMT and how much they are upregulated? I always find this concept so confusing and it seems like no consensus on what such genes should be? Like TWIST and Snai1/2?

The impact of EMT is profound. It has established very strong&solid conditioned reflexes.

'EMT..neural crest cells are..mesenchymal...'
Astonishing.
Migration is the intrinsic property of NCCs, and 'EMT' factors snai1/2/twist are specific/enriched in NCCs&their roles in NCCs are well-known.
So, NCCs are mesenchymal because they express genes specific to NCCs. WOW.

e.g., if you think cancer cells with Ecad-low/negative and Snai1-high means cancer cell undergoes EMT, and then targeting EMT as a therapy, it will very possibly not work because you cannot targeting something unknown as a successful therapy.
Precision doesn't just mean precision at the molecular level. It also means the accuracy in interpreting data, and accuracy in understanding the properties of cancer cells.
