Net zero 2050 but NWShelf gas until 2070 means squillions of ACCUs required. Just as well we have 100% offsets #SafeguardMechanism filled with dodgy HIR ACCUs. Whole thing is a carbon bomb and a fraud to enable it. Serious investigation would bring down this house of cards. @ketanjoshi.co

There’s a strange breed of “rusted on Labor supporters” in Australia who love Labor for conscious classist reasons, & who live in notionally safe Labor seats & mindlessly back their local Labor candidate despite the betrayal on fossil fuels, #EPBC #EPA #AUKUS #safeguardmechanism #Gaza #closethegap

It is the ‘robust offset system’ that is the con. You cannot offset new and additional greenhouse gas emissions to atmosphere. The science makes it clear that no new emissions can be permitted. Offsetting is greenwashing and should have been rejected #SafeguardMechanism #auspol

OH MY GOD thank you Chris - Australia's Safeguard mechanism is pretty much the same (and worse in many ways as its open to external carbon credits as well as 'in-scheme' ones)

We've seen ultra-polluters *being paid* more, even w/ rising emissions

INPEX also dictates 🇦🇺 fossil fuel policy, climate policy (SafeguardMechanism) & enviro mgt (SeaDumpingBill)

If LNP had been in power and moved same amendments to Safeguard Mechanism as Bowen did, would the ‘just pass it’ brigade have been so keen to undermine the ambition of Greens and Independents in trying to make it stronger? Policy integrity versus partisan politics= 2023 debate SafeguardMechanism.

Excellent work by @ketanjoshi.co in his first #OffTheCharts for us pointing out that the Safeguard Mechanism just safeguards gas companies from having to worry about reducing emissions

Climate Integrity has a great analysis comparing diesel subsidies paid to big miners to the costs of the Safeguard Mechanism.

It shows miners receiving vastly more in diesel (fossil fuel) subsidies than it costs them to comply with the Safeguard Mechanism.

Australia Institute research shows the Safeguard Mechanism has failed to deliver promised reductions in gross emissions.

Its biggest failure is its overwhelming reliance on carbon offsets, which have enabled fossil fuel producers to INCREASE their actual pollution.

Australia needs a Safeguard Mechanism that genuinely safeguards the climate. That means requiring real emissions reductions at facilities themselves. Carbon credits could remain a tool of last resort.

Our emissions policy is toothless, counterintuitive and confusing. That's by design
Labor's safeguard mechanism is a shockingly deceptive piece of industry greenwashing disguised as climate regulation. It has to go.

The Government’s Safeguard Mechanism is supposed to limit emissions.

Instead, it just lets companies cheat.

The massive carbon bomb North West Shelf project met 100% of its Safeguard target using dodgy carbon offsets that won't cancel out its huge emissions.
