Hello, Blue Sky! It's been 3 months since my book BRAVE THE WILD RIVER was published by W.W. Norton. It's the story of two botanists who ran the Colorado River in 1938 to make the first formal plant collection in the Grand Canyon. I'll be posting here about the book, science, writing (and cats).

(🧵) It's the anniversary of the EF5 tornado disaster in Moore, OK on May 20, 2013. The event is explored in detail in my book TORNADO COUNTRY, serving along with El Reno as the climax of the whole narrative.

As a science writer for children, I strive for accuracy. Yet we live with an anti-science administration that spews lies daily. We can’t let them get away with it. Speak out, write out, in your own way. Expose their lies and ignorance with truth. Cite sources when possible.

Anybody who writes children’s books knows you don’t write down to kids. You write up to
them. Children’s questions are profound. I learned this years ago when my 4-year-old daughter asked me, “Mom, does the universe have an edge?”

As a writer, it's always such a joy to be able to come back to my science homebase, microbiology. This week I'm working on two microbiology stories for clients and also an article for my blog for International Micoorganism Day (Sep 17).

What are you working on this week?
