Bluesky client or plugin that lets you bayes-classify posts you think are LLMish, works the same way you used to be able to train your personal spamassassin.

Did you know spam email is called "spam" because it tastes just like SPAM?
It's a tragic tale. Every day, billions of innocent little spam emails are sacrificed to feed ravenous mail sorting daemons. That's why the filter is called "SpamAssassin".

SpamAssassin spotted!
Folks who complain about Kubernetes being hard never had to build and maintain a mail server with postfix, clamav, spamassassin (and its 55 perl modules), dovecot, courier imap and a lamp server to run egroupware and admin interface :x
And backup mailboxes using rsync and pray

This SpamAssassin test has been disabled for *rustles papers* 18 years
Maybe it should just be deleted...?

one of the most common use cases in active deployment today is spam decection. this has been around a while (e.g. this is a June 2022 paper describing the use case) arxiv.org/abs/2206.02443

This, yes. I trained SpamAssassin on my spam and known good emails in the late nineties back when I was still reading email in PINE and I would love today's versions of that but calling everything AI now means I can't tell if it's good modeling or hallucinating crap.
like, these differences are subtle--a spam filter is a language model, "tuning" and "training" are differences of emphasis rather than kind--but if google is going to obfuscate rather than educate and be transparent they deserve what they get

SpamAssassin does assign certain misspellings a higher spam score! Some of the rules descriptions are hilarious, too. This is an older release because their newer documentation is impossible to navigate, but you can get the picture: spamassassin.apache.org/old/tests_3_...

I ran my own mail server as long as I could, and then... nope. Remember when SpamAssassin was the state of the art? (Hell, for all I know it still is, somehow, somewhere. I'm no longer required to know.)
I *hate* that we have to pick a BigLarge provider to have our own *viable* email domains.

SpamAssassin is a bit of a joke. I run my newsletters though www.mail-tester.com and it flagged a hit for rule URI_TRY_3LD.
Here's the rule. github.com/apache/spama...
The problem was a link to Microsoft's docs on Bitlocker, which are at [learn].microsoft.com.
So I shortened it with TinyURL 🤷♂️

I kinda miss running my own mail server but the day I realized that I no longer had to spend any more time ever inspecting my logs, tuning SpamAssassin rules or otherwise dealing with the hell SMTP had become even by 2005? Was a _good_ day.
Turning down my DNS servers felt like a self-betrayal tho.
