It was fabulous to appear on @channel5tv.bsky.social tonight in Rich Lives Poor Lives with @robrinder.bsky.social (as well as a host of other great historians!). I was about an hour in, speaking to Rob at Tilbury Fort #richlivespoorlives #tilburyfort #spanisharmada

Tilbury Fort in Essex, originally built by Henry VIII and enlarged in the 1670s. It was famously near here that Elizabeth I addressed her troops in August 1588 as the Spanish Armada approached #tilburyfort #elizabethi #spanisharmada #queenelizabeth

The Armada maps, drawn in 1589, show how events unfolded in 1588 when the Spanish Armada threatened England.

They are at National Trust Buckland Abbey, on loan from the Royal Navy Museums until the end of this month.

🌊 #OTD in #History 28 May 1588, the #SpanishArmada began to disembark from Lisbon to invade England. Due to its size, the fleet took two days to leave port. The fleet was composed of 132 ships, with 7,000 sailors and 17,000 soldiers. In command was the Duke of Medina Sidonia.
