A photograph of Rodin's famous cast sculpture of a muscular nude male figure; arms thrust upward towards the sky, as if in agony. Part of SDMA's permanent outdoor sculptural installations. Description: Auguste Rodin's The Prodigal Son is a famous bronze and stone sculpture modeled around 1884. Originally conceived as a figure for his bronze portal, The Gates of Hell, Rodin isolated the figure and re-titled it after the biblical parable of the prodigal son. Instead of a traditional calm figure, Rodin depicts the man with an arching, muscular body, open mouth, and arms thrown up in anguish. Casts and versions exist in multiple global museums, including LACMA and Musee Rodin.
