#TheDragoneer
There is a running gag about paella in #TheDragoneer, though, so I guess that's something.

#LateNightWrite I'm Ellen. I'm revising #JustStabsWIP, about a stabby sapphic disaster who has to be kidnapped on her own quest; querying #TheDragoneer, featuring steampunk-cyborg dragons; and have #OuroborosWIP, which vibes like a steampunk space opera, out with betas.
Ya know what folks? Since I don't have my PC where I'm at and it makes it hard to host, but I am around sorta...how about we use the tag this week to get to know each other? Post a little intro for one of your WIPs under the #LateNightWrite tag and ask questions in each other's replies. Mingle.✌️
Hey there #LateNightWrite Friends, we're postponing tonight's chat for a week as @blackbirb.bsky.social is unable to host tonight.

She's still affected by the flooding in Brazil. Please consider sending her support or a kind message to help mitigate the losses from the flood. 🙏

#LateNightWrite As noted #TheDragoneer just has them on opposite sides of the war, and Kane in fact respects Keire.

But... 1/2
Third Question: What is your protagonist(s) relationship with your antagonist(s) like? Are they on opposing sides due to circumstance or is any part of the conflict personal?

#TheDragoneer Book 1 The Bonding by #VickieKnestaut & #DannyKnestaut has fighting dragons, battling kingdoms, hidden histories & a strong female lead. Narrated by #StacyGonzalez in an earnest performance on audiobook. Thank you #TantorMedia & #NetGalley for the e-audio ALC. #BookSky

#LateNightWrite Heyo, I'm Ellen. I'm revising #JustStabsWIP, I've got #OuroborosWIP with betas, and I'm querying #TheDragoneer, so we'll see what I talk about tonight.
Happy Saturday and welcome another #LateNightWrite! Let's start with Introductions, tell us about yourself and your WIP(s) in any way you like.

#TheDragoneer: Keire never comes to terms with her grief and how her disability changes her life

#OuroborosWIP: Lara is so desperate for her former mentor's approval that she joins her on the bad side
#LateNightWrite When you consider your main characters, their goals and aspirations, their intended path... What would you consider their bad ending to be? What would their darkest possible timeline look like?

#LateNightWrite My MCs almost always have some super important friendships. Both my querying WIP, #TheDragoneer, and my revising WIP, #OuroborosWIP, are prime examples with their respective crews being critical support systems for the MC without ever having any chances of romance within them.
First question: how important are friends and other platonic/non-romantic relationships in your writing?

#LateNightWrite I used Spanish inspiration for parts of #TheDragoneer, which did influence food, hence the paella running gag. Although you never see the characters eating the good stuff, because they're in the military so it's just whatever grub's available.
#LateNightWrite What about local cuisine? Are there foods unique to your setting? If you're writing in a real world location, do you showcase any foods particular to your chosen setting?

Obviously I need to acknowledge #TheDragoneer and talk about Enigma, the steampunk-cyborg dragon. She's got permanent armor, artificial front limbs, and scales that are thundercloud gray.
Authors, who’s the coolest non-human character in your book?

Convince us of their coolness any way you can.

#LateNightWrite

Well, #TheDragoneer is about one soldier's experience in a war and how she's (not) coping with her injury and how that might get her discharged when she just wants to fight, so I'm gonna have to go with yes on that one.
#LateNightWrite Is there any in-world conflict taking place in your story? A war, a big social movement, etc? If so, how does it impact the plot?

#LateNightWrite Not in any specific way. In #TheDragoneer a lot of the story occurs along the coast, and there’s an aerial battle over the water, but there’s never been any deep thought behind it.
First question: Do you feature water in your works? Is it a setting or a symbol? What does water represent for you?

#LateNightWrite Well, #TheDragoneer is the obvious story, since the world is neither queer-friendly nor disability-friendly. Although the latter is complicated by the fact that it's military, so disability matters, but there's no need to be a dick about it. And, yes, these things are defied.
#LateNightWrite Are there any rules or traditions in your story’s setting that you personally believe should be defied? Are they?

#LateNightWrite In #TheDragoneer, they have steampunk-cyborg dragons to fight wars that they can fully control. But as we see from other dragons, these are beasts with their own free will. So what is being done to these dragons is... pretty ethically iffy.

(I should explore more in a sequel.)
#LateNightWrite Are there any aspects of your setting or lore that seem innocuous but are actually quite dark when you think about it?

#LateNightWrite I have a few characters who have husky voices, but that’s about it. And Keire from #TheDragoneer probably smells like smoke and cigarettes because she’s a soldier who smokes.
#LateNightWrite Do you know what your characters' voices sound like? Have you given thought to how they smell?

#SFFtalk I really go all over the place. Like, #TheDragoneer is about grief and identity therein, whereas #JustStabsWIP is about believing in and helping people.

Not themes, but I always write secondary world, and I usually base off late 1800s/early 1900s tech, because I like the aesthetic.
#SFFtalk Question 2: What themes do you tend to return to in SFF?

Could be as a reader/audience member and/or as an author! (:

For me, the status of the outsider and the state of being outside, or of being caught in between different identities, always seem to come up.

#LateNightWrite For #TheDragoneer, I love that a story that started off as just having the badassery of steampunk-cyborg dragons ended up really being about loss, grief, and how that redefines identity. While also having cool battle scenes and characters who were fun to write.
We're doing tonight's chat a little differently:

Use this chat time to go off about an aspect of your WIP(s) that you like the most, or just have bottled up and wanna rant about.

Go wild, go free. I'll post the final promo post at the regular time.

#LateNightWrite That hasn't been something I've particularly addressed in my stories. In #TheDragoneer Keire is failing to cope with Ordego's death, and in #JustStabsWIP Rin doesn't want to honor her dead parents. Maybe it'll be something I address in a later WIP (my underworld story, perhaps?).
Question Two: How are people remembered after they pass on in your worlds? Are there rituals and practices for honouring the dead and keeping their memories alive? (Like Dia de los Muertos, for example).

#LateNightWrite As mentioned, #TheDragoneer is along the coast of the ocean. In #OuroborosWIP there's a river mentioned, but it really plays absolutely no role other than being there, although part of it is diverted into the walls of this fort/settlement thing.
Second question: Are there bodies of water featured in your works? Are they large or small? Populated or remote? Any interesting features?

#LateNightWrite In #TheDragoneer, Kane has the enemy’s most dangerous dragon, so to the MC’s side of the war Kane is the bad guy, but to the other side she’s a hero. That was definitely the point in that story, where I wanted Kane to be the antagonist but not the villain.
Question two: What is the public perception of your antagonist(s)? Do people see them as the bad guys or are they considered lawful or justified by the general populace?
#LateNightWrite
October 8, 2023 at 2:35 AM
#LateNightWrite So this is a big part of my querying WIP, #TheDragoneer. My MC Keire defines her life by being a soldier, but she has a serious crisis of identity when injury means she's supposed to retire. There's a lot of struggling to come to terms (denying) and needing to find new meaning.
#LateNightWrite It's Disability Pride Month, folks! In what ways are disabilities addressed/portrayed in your story and what significance does that representation have to you personally?

#LateNightWrite I think I've gotten lighter as I've matured as a writer. Like I used to just kill characters off because it was dramatic, but a lot more characters live now. I don't know that I have dark themes, but certainly heavier, like how #TheDragoneer deals about grief and identity.
#LateNightWrite Let’s talk about darkness tonight. When you consider your body of work, WIPs included, how often and how deeply are you willing to delve into darker themes? If you haven’t at all, would you consider doing so in the future?

Oh, I'm not very good with memes. But #TheDragoneer has "Can Keire cope with her grief? (Spoiler: she cannot.)" and #OuroborosWIP has, I don't know, quotes from Marei where she says, "Bite me," and "Blow me, asshole," to the villain and I feel those could be memified somehow.
First question: got any memes? Describe your author brand with memes. Or describe your WIP with memes!

#LateNightWrite Lara's home is her ship, Ouroboros, and Ouroboros is not, nor will she ever be, for sale. The audacity of even asking. That's like putting a friend for sale.

(In #TheDragoneer Keire has been in the military for so long she doesn't really have a home.)
Second Question: Put your protagonists home/base up for sale. What would the listing say? Would you buy it? For how much?

"Do you think clams are shy?"

and

"Have you ever noticed that babies have cabbage faces?"

The wonderful thing is, they don't make much more sense in context. #TheDragoneer
