The UFlorida trustee board chair was disappointed that his daughter judged UMichigan better than all Florida options. So he hired the president of UMichigan to go to UF.

We should let Florida and Indiana discover what life is like without UFlorida or Purdue, and expand capacity elsewhere to make up for it.
We should also establish some civilian federal universities that provide education with cheap tuition & are explicitly designed as feeders for federal agencies.

Under no circumstances should you matriculate to a state school in a red state unless it's your only option. We've already seen UT-Austin and UFlorida (and New College) become fully co-opted by the legislature, and it looks like Indiana University system is next.
I don't even know what to say about living here right now.

When I taught at UFlorida, I opened each semester by having each student get up in front of the class and tell people their favorite book and the last book read to get them used to talking in class. Everyone had answers. I wonder if they would today.

Does this include universities and colleges? Seems like the DOGE DOE has already done the damage and is moving on. What about UFlorida where DeSantis removed the DEI dept, fired administrators, punished anything to do with DEI. What will happen now? Do you see any big push to reinstate DEI programs?

The same whether state or federal level — play nice with a vindictive chief executive known to play dirty or lose vital funding and have increased oversight.
