How do people work on side projects and not just go down a constant stream of tangents. 😅 Asking for... a friend. Currently, considering writing a WinRT binding for kotlin 😭😂.

Also see also: Windows RT, not to be confused with WinRT.

The more I dig, the worse things get

similarly, if it doesn’t work on my XP retro rig and you listed “any horseperating system” under operating system compatibility, only for me to learn you only tested it on Windows 10 and the binary calls the WinRT API for toast notifications, then you just wasted my evening on troubleshooting

Microsoft tried with Silverlight, WinForms, WPF, WinRT, UWP, WinUI 2 and WinUI 3, before eventually giving up and just using WebView2 and React Native for Windows 11

Meta seems to have given up as well and just switched over to WebView2 as well

I need to reconcile what went down in the intervening time since I last put COM down.

Microsoft, in true Microsoft fashion, has muddled the waters a bit with .NET and WinRT.

Sigh.

Quick walkthrough...
🧠💨 C++/WinRT tip: that delegate you got? It might not be agile — meaning it can’t hop threads. Wrap it in winrt::agile_ref to make a cross‑context‑safe version you can invoke anywhere.

Love the dream world Microsoft are trying to create where all the UWP and WinRT API docs are written as if Win32 no longer exists, despite it still being the only sane API to use and the one all good Windows software is still written for.

Oh wow, we can now call Windows Runtime API methods dynamically within Typescript and JavaScript without needing a native add-on. Cool. #javascript #typescript #windows #nodejs

React Native's networking stack is based on native primitives:

🍏 iOS & macOS: NSURLRequest
🤖 Android: OkHttpClient
🪟 Windows: winrt::Windows::Web:Http

They implement XMLHttpRequest in JavaScript based on JS-native bindings to those, and from there, they use whatwg-fetch to polyfill fetch().
