One of my favorite fresco fragments from #Pompeii, which depicts a griffin attacking an Aramaspi, one of a legendary tribe of one-eyed people from northern Scythia. The battles between the Aramaspi and griffins are known via a lost work by Aristeas, reported in Herodotus. 🏺

Fresco of a griffin - a mythological creature with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion - attacking an Arimaspi, one of a legendary tribe of one-eyed people from northern Scythia. Uniquely, this griffin is snow-white, its wings spread out; the yellow-clad and masked Arimaspi holds his pelta - a crescent-shaped shield - above him to protect himself from the attacking griffin. There's a gilded silver krater on the left, and a fabulous fragment of a large gilded and colored shield on the right, which depicts the head of gold-helmeted Athena. The battles between the Aramaspi and griffins are known via a lost work by Aristeas, reported in Herodotus. The battles took place in the Hyperborean lands near the cave of Boreas, the North Wind, with the griffins defending their hoards of gold against the Arimaspi. An assortment of picture of my Castrella OCs Lyna and Aristea, as well as @dizziberry.bsky.social's Castrella OC Eleanor. There are several Aristeas on the page in his dragon form, though at a younger age. The form is like a small green gecko with accents of maroon, yellow and white particularly along his feet paws, wing tips and spike things along his arms. In one picture, he is taking a little steppy like the at meme image of the small cat doing the same from around a corner. Another image has him standing like a very happy gecko on all fours with his tail perked up. It's cute! Another Aristea has him looking like he is climbing on a wall or something with his tongue sticking out. There is a Lyna on the page in the same expression/pose as an emote from our Castrella server called EllaYay because I was talking to a friend about Ella and Lyna and wanted to draw her in a like-expression. Next to that Lyna is the emote as reference, and above that is an Aristea in human form making a sort of :D face in happiness.

Lol I was more taking issue with Luke being characterized as “Greek literature”. Which it technically is, I suppose, insofar as it’s literature written in Greek. It’s just not culturally Greek (it’s culturally Jewish, obvi—like Aristeas, the Maccabees, Philo, Josephus, etc.)

Contemporaries of Ennion who also signed their glassware were Aristeas, Jason, Meges, and Neikais. Neikais was a name which could be used for men and women so it’s been suggested Neikais was the first female glassblower from the eastern Mediterranean! Example here:

[from Wikipedia -- "Septuagint"] Jewish legend Fragment of a Greek manuscript Beginning of the Letter of Aristeas to Philocrates (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, 11th century) According to tradition, Ptolemy II Philadelphus (the Greek Pharaoh of Egypt) sent seventy-two Hebrew translators—six from each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel—from Jerusalem to Alexandria to translate the Tanakh from Biblical Hebrew into Koine Greek, for inclusion in his library.[20] This narrative is found in the possibly pseudepigraphic Letter of Aristeas to his brother Philocrates,[21] and is repeated by Philo of Alexandria, Josephus (in Antiquities of the Jews),[22] and by later sources (including Augustine of Hippo).[23] It is also found in the Tractate Megillah of the Babylonian Talmud: King Ptolemy once gathered 72 Elders. He placed them in 72 chambers, each of them in a separate one, without revealing to them why they were summoned. He entered each one's room and said: "Write for me the Torah of Moshe, your teacher". God put it in the heart of each one to translate identically as all the others did.
