did you know that in the week following the phase advance, there is a 6% increase in traffic fatalities, 24% higher risk of heart attacks, 8% higher stroke rate, 11% strike in depressive episodes, and a 6% higher rate of workplace injuries?

circadian rhythm disruption and sleep deprivation, fun!!!!

Maybe you’re a “night owl”

Or maybe you have Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome & nothing you do makes a difference in how late you wake up or when you can go to sleep so you stay up late every night since you can’t sleep anyway because your circadian rhythm is in the wrong timezone.

Joke about being "old morning people" all you want, but it's a real phenomenon.

As we get older, our circadian rhythms phase shift towards an earlier wakeup time.

#Non24 Sleep-Wake Disorder and Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder can seriously harm mental health, especially if someone doesn't know they live with a Circadian Sleep Disorder. And even if one does, the strain of pushing through work, school, &/or parenting on a mismatched schedule can take a toll.

Thank you. It’s in phase IIIs for circadian rhythm disorders now, and I’m going to demand we try it when I go back in and report that no, trazadone not only doesn’t help, it causes sleep paralysis and nightmares. And if you won’t give me my z-drug back, let’s try to treat the actual disorder.

It is! Delayed sleep phase disorder = your circadian rhythm is 24h, just seriously shifted (at least 2 hours from desired sleep time; severe is anything more than 4 hours). Non-24 Hour Sleep/Wake disorder = your circadian is more than 24h. Some people have regular periodicity, some don't.

1/9 Our publication is now out on eLife! In this study, we became interested in how the circadian repressive phase is organized in circadian time and subcellular space, focusing on the main mammalian circadian repressors: PER2, CRY1, and CK1delta (CK1d). elifesciences.org/articles/110...
Nuclear CK1δ as a critical determinant of PER:CRY complex dynamics and circadian period
Repressive PER2:CRY1:CK1δ complexes assembling in the cytosol enter the nucleus, where PER2 hyperphosphorylation eventually disrupts the complex, causing PER2 to relocalize to the cytoplasm, allowing ...

New study reveals intracellular potassium levels regulate the period and phase of circadian rhythms, impacting cell division. Key insight for tackling diseases! PMID:42173908, Nat Commun 2026, @NatureComms https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-026-73351-2 #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG 🧪
Intracellular potassium levels orchestrate circadian rhythmicity and cell division | Nature Communications
Circadian (~24 h) rhythms are a fundamental feature of life, and their disruption increases the risk of infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, and cancer. We previously identified circadian oscillations in intracellular potassium concentrations in cells across kingdoms. Using highly divergent eukaryotic cell types, we now show that potassium levels act to regulate the period and phase of clock gene expression rhythms, therefore establishing intracellular potassium as a bona fide regulator of cellular circadian rhythms. Intracellular potassium also regulates critical events in the cell cycle. Strikingly, we observe that manipulating potassium levels inhibits cell proliferation in a circadian phase-dependent manner. As the timing of cell division is tuned by the circadian clock, we hypothesised that potassium rhythms could mechanistically link cell proliferation rhythms to the circadian cycle. In line with this hypothesis, we find that potassium levels are not only sufficient to instr
