#OnePlaceStudy #Colnbrook Oh... Sarah Ann Wall. You are only five in 1851 and you are already leading a double life. You are either with your parents William & Harriet in Sunbury, Middx or with your aunt Sarah Sparks in Colnbrook six miles away. I think it was more likely she was in Colnbrook!

The haunted Ostrich Inn in Colnbrook, Berkshire. One landlord encouraged wealthy guests to sleep in a room in which the bed was bolted to a trapdoor. The landlord would release it, murdering the guest by plunging them into a vat of boiling ale below. #gothic #folklore #history #crime #Halloween

#OnThisDay 142 years ago the GWR opened Colnbrook station on Bath Road on its branch to Staines (West). Since 1981 the line has ended here, just beyond the oil terminal, but the crossing lights still cling on alongside the Stationmaster's House. Google buff.ly/1jRhncr

Back to School and work, holidays are over. Poyle Mills would be operating. The picture shows the Colnbrook Boy's National School. The yard was shared with the girl's school. In foreground the yard is divided from track leading to St Thomas' church behind the school. #OnePlaceStudies #Colnbrook

#GenHour All keyboard work today adding property details to Colnbrook people. Also a bit of adding random information to random people. 😉 Just done Edward Seymour Teulon who died in Colnbrook & buried in Islington. Confirmed by the address in the register. That will do nicely! 👍

For Colnbrook OPS this week I have been working on a map where buildings can be grouped by date range. This is the 1939 group. Eventually the 1850 to 1934 tenements will be added. #OnePlaceWednesday #OnePlaceSudies.

On this #OnePlaceWednesday I'm Indexing some parish records for Bucks FHS. Just by chance I have happened to be in the letter 'C' for #Colnbrook-OPS ! Colnbrook Chapel ( St Mary ) has a only a passing acquaintance with record keeping. That improved when St Thomas was built in 1852.

Happy New Year everybody. On this day in 1715 John Burcombe, Weaver of Colnbrook married Elizabeth Howard at All Hallows Barking by the Tower. They probably lived on the south side of the High Street as all their six children were baptised in St Michael's Horton. #OnePlaceStudies #Colnbrook-OPS

If you check to see What’s New on the Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy website you’ll see that several individuals and families have been added in the last 30 days. A site well worth exploring if you have an interest in #Colnbrook and/or have ancestors who lived there! #OnePlaceWednesday

#GenHour It was quarter past and I'm late! On the other screen are some Quarter Sessions Licensing records I need to transcribe for #Colnbrook. In 1768 three of the five Inns in Horton are in Colnbrook. In Langley there are four pubs in Colnbrook, but there are two the name George. & Crown in Iver!

Signatures in records play an important part in #OnePlaceStudies. Here those in Horton side are in that parish & lived on South side of the street. Langley was on the North. From Colnbrook Town Book dated 1690. There 15 men were running #Colnbrook and where farmers, innkeepers, & shopkeepers

Colnbrook, its age and first records🔗. How far back do records of #Colnbrook go? Did it appear in the Domesday Book, as claimed by a number of websites? Find out in an article added by Tony Sargeant @tony-colnbrook-ops.bsky.social to his #OnePlaceStudy website earlier this month. #OnePlaceWednesday

#OnePlaceStudy Colnbrook is a small place on Bucks-Middx border on the Bath Road between London & Windsor. As transport improved the town went into decline. Paper making and a tannery became major employers. Place where the apple Cox's Orange Pippin was created. #OnePlaceWednesday
