Fabulous visit to ElmleyNNR today. The highlight was the WHITE-TAILED EAGLE, seen between gates 2 & 3 on the entrance track. While it fed on the ground it was mobbed by multiple C Buzzards, Marsh Harriers & 1 Red Kite. It then circled up & departed high to the east c12 noon.

Fab day at Elmley NNR today. Barn Owls out all day! Short Eared Owls very obliging. Hares feeling frisky in the spring sunshine. And a BlackTailed Godwit originally ringed in The Netherlands in May 2024

Apologies for the positive post on this platform; here's a beautiful young Curlew chick, part of an inspiring "headstarting" project at #ElmleyNNR in Kent, trying to increase numbers of this endangered bird. It will be released into the wild in July, wish it well.

This is all I got (besides the lovely beardies of course) so very envious of you seeing the owls @sarahlonges.bsky.social #elmleynnr

At Elmley NNR on Monday a small group gathered to commemorate a brave British pilot who died that day, shot down and undiscovered for 10 years. He and remains of his plane landed in water at what is now ElmleyNNR in Kent.

A Reed Bunting has ventured out from the reeds in the relative open, just a bare-leaved shrub for a perch and cover.
Then away, as passing walker behind me reminded it to return to the reeds.

We’ve had a month of big raptors
White Tailed Eagles and Golden Eagles on Mull, Bald Eagles in Pennsylvania and then a WTE pitches up on our home patch in Kent 💕 #addBird #Birding #ElmleyNNR #UKbirding #USbirding

I don't often see Hares, so I was thrilled to bits to spot this one at @ElmleyNNR at the weekend. 🤎

First Corn Buntings of the year for us at #ElmleyNNR today. White Tailed Eagle was considerably larger than the usual fence post raptors seen there… even at a distance through heat haze. The Little Owl was downright judgmental 😂 Also loads of Cinnabar and 6 spot burnet moths.

For a venture into NE Kent a recommend via photography/birders I follow is the Elmley Nature Reserve on Sheppey (@ElmleyNNR on twitter). Big site with 4 hides, has resident bitterns & curlews (are part of UK recovery plans) plus on site accommodation too. www.elmleynaturereserve.co.uk/spend-the-day

The collective noun for a group of Lapwings is a 'deceit'. In that case there must be an enormous amount of deception going on at @ElmleyNNR, as practically everywhere you look there is a Lapwing. 😍

Male Reed Buntings, perched on and singing from Reeds at @ElmleyNNR for #WildWebsWednesday.

There is more Grass Vetchling, Lathyrus nissolia, than I have ever seen before in my life, flowering all over @ElmleyNNR at the moment. 😍

It came across my radar recently (thanks to @GarethStamp77 & @Jo_the_botanist), so was super excited to unexpectedly see lots of Sea Clover, Trifolium squamosum, around the grassy sea wall (typical habitat) @ElmleyNNR. Sometimes you find the best things when you're not looking.🤩

I didn't manage to get terribly good photos, but it was lovely to see this Great Crested Grebe carrying three humbug chicks on its back at @ElmleyNNR at the weekend.

There are so many chicks of all kinds of different species at @ElmleyNNR at the moment. I've never seen Shelduck chicks before. 😍

Common Terns at @ElmleyNNR. I think the one on the right is commanding all the other birds to strike their best poses for my photographs.

Marsh Frogs wot I have seen recently. Top one at @ElmleyNNR and bottom one at @RSPBRainham.
