Worked YT3NR and LZ1ZF on 20m with my new JPC PAC-12 antenna and 100w from my Yaesu FT857 in the garden. Conditions a bit up and down, hence the 100w, rather than QRP. #HAMR

Morning Dale. I had an FT857 for camping for years and had never considered one of these. My mate Mal G1NOX raved about how good it was and I bleated about how weird it looked.
He left it to me in his Will bless him. He was right. It is a much better radio than the 857!

#hamradio people, would it make sense in 2025 to get a FT857 or a IC706mkII in order to have 6m and 2m SSB in a relatively portable factor or should I just go for a larger FT991? It looks like the only HF/UHF rigs out there are either old or huge.
I already have a G90 for portable HF (think SOTA)...

It didn't perform that well so I changed to Yaesu. I made cables for Yaesu to connect to other equipment so I stuck on Yaesu (FT100, FT847, FT857, FT1000MP, FTdx5000MP, FTdx10).
No complains. Yaesu never let me down.

High SWR can cause a radio to reboot. This occurs because the radio's power monitor detects a drop in DC voltage when it attempts to transmit with an improperly matched antenna system. The radio may interpret this as a fault, leading to a reboot to protect itself from potential damage. FT857 manual.
