I have officially completed my doctoral studies in environmental sciences at @univie.ac.at!
I successfully defended on August 28 and received my Dr.rer.nat. degree yesterday. Here are a few pictures from my defense.
Thanks to my #Geoecology colleagues for the wonderful doctoral hut!

It's done! 🎓
I've successfully completed my doctoral #defense in #Geoecology at University of Potsdam. I'm especially grateful for the warm support by family, fantastic colleagues, and the Potsdam fire department! 🔥
Excited to now dive even deeper into researching #wildfires in boreal forests! 🧪🌏⚒️

My personal highlights: "Wir können Alles außer Ozean" great description for our amazing GeoEnviro-Department @unituebingen.bsky.social - THE place-to-be for geo-ecology & environmental science if the marine system is not your focus. And: dinner à la "Night at the Museum"
Congrats to UT #Geoecology!

We could summarise these approaches as biogeographic, compared to a dynamic systems approach unifying geology and botany which can be expanded as Geoecology recognising complexity of ecosystem interactions involving other taxa.

Here’s a fun paper for southeast asia. Ultramafic rocks (mantle-derived) are an end member that are particularly hard for plants to colonize.

Another example might be young volcanic rocks as soil development occurs and nutrients accumulate.

In fantastic weather our #Geoecology working group from @univie.ac.at got an insight into the work of #archaeology #burgenland during the excavation of a middle #neolithic #circularditch in #Rechnitz including a #soil sample ;)
On 24.4 you can talk to experts on site and visit the excavation

Beautiful fall day on the mountain above campus for some geoecology work as part of our USFWS-funded project on Plethodon pauleyi. Easy to forget how spoiled we are having field sites like this just a 15 min drive from the classroom door. One of many reasons why I love working in “far” SWVA.

Field trip season has started! 🤩
Yesterday, I supervised an excursion to the #Weltacker in Nuremberg with #geoecology students (part of a seminar led by Johanna Pausch & Eva Lehndorff). Fascinating to see how parking spaces can become wonderful places of food production & community building.
