Have you heard of the gigacasting though?
April 22, 2025 at 2:15 PM
okay, so, based on decisions they’ve made just this week, we can infer that tesla is giving up on:
- gigacasting
- model 2
- supercharger
- robotaxi
- roadster (lol)

which leaves… AI? *that’s* what’s trading at $180/share?

⚡️"BYD Enters the Gigacasting Game
After being quiet about the adoption of Gigacastings, BYD is now buying a 9,000 t Giga Press

BYD has invested in the construction of an "integrated body" die casting project, (Gigacasting), for the future platform of its vehicles."

Imagine the price to get a bespoke subframe to replace a gigacasting

It might seem a bit odd, especially since gigacasting promises to revolutionize auto production by reducing costs and complexity. But Slate tells us that there's a method behind its madness.

The Slate Truck Won't Use Gigacasting. Here's Why It Doesn't Need It

sorry: “gigacasting”?

the whole auto industry loves gigacastings, the easy way to manufacture truck frames *5 seconds later* we regret to announce that the gigacasting literally just sheared away

One thing about Elon Musk’s Garbage Cars that we don’t talk enough about: Because of how they’re built (a process called “gigacasting” where the basic structure of the car is formed from a single piece of aluminum) they’re largely unrepairable after getting into accidents, and have to be totalled.

A little hard to tell, but this definitely doesn't rule out a cracked gigacasting... disposable ass truck

Two-step solution for the problem of Tesla's "innovative" manufacturing processes making cars hard to repair:

1. stop manufacturing
2. stop repairing

You just know Elon insisted on using gigacasting in his shitty cars because he thought it sounded "cool" and "futuristic"

But but gigacasting!

Am I looking at this correctly? It looks like that broken aluminum piece is part of the air spring upper mount. If so, it seems to have a very small cross section to be carrying the weight of the vehicle. Resulting damage to the gigacasting is icing on the DFMEA cake.

Maintaining ICE and EV lines means a commitment to multi-propulsion which means incumbent car companies can't take full advantage of cost cutting moves by reconceiving car manufacturing. Tesla did not have this problem and was able to pioneer gigacasting which reduced the number of parts.

Just to let you know: Tesla's Gigacasting makes repairs expensive. Minor damage to large underbody castings (rear/front) may require full replacement, potentially totaling the car. Costs can exceed $10,000. Affected: Model Y, Cybertruck, Model 3 (Highland), newer Model S/X.
