I’m doing series of native plant workshops with my county libraries. I said multiple times how I’ve never seen swallowtails on Zizia, our only native host plant for them. I came home to find 4 on my Zizia.

Anise Swallowtail is another frequent visitor to moist soil. Not as large as other swallowtail species. Has adapted to many habitats and hostplants of the American West. Pyle (2018) finds it easy to attract to a garden. Populations peak late June/early July (www.inaturalist.org/taxa/51097-P...).
Anise Swallowtail has a wingspan between 2 to 3 inches. Wings are mostly yellow with black bands along the fore and hindwing edges. Forewing yellow marginal spots in black band aren't rounded, but flattened outwardly. Distinguished from yellow tiger swallowtail butterflies by being smaller in size and lacking the vertical black striping patterns on the upperwings. There are yellowish-orange to red eyespots near the tails of each wing, each containing a centered black pupil. We had some Green Milkweed (Asclepias viridis) root from pots into the ground last year. Today I was happy to see two healthy Monarch butterfly caterpillars munching on it.

Found a little friend eating the parsley this morning. This beautiful Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) caterpillar is my first sighting of the year, despite us growing Lovage, parsley dill, and a native host: Angelica atropurpurea.

Pale Swallowtail is a common #butterfly of the Pacific Northwest. We are lucky it is so; it is large and colorful, a sight to behold. Cooperative when on moist soil with scads of other butterflies. Straightforward/easy identification 👍😊
Pale Swallowtail measures three inches in size. The only large swallowtail colored creamy white with black tiger striping (parallel to abdomen on wings) instead of yellow/black combination. Small amounts/spots of blue and orange are located at base of rear upper wing tails. Hostplants are Ceanothus sp. Plant penstemon, sweet William and phlox in your garden to attract. Reference: Pyle (2002)

Today I got my fennel and common rue #hostplants for #swallowtail caterpillars🐛 They tend like fennel and dill plants more, but will lay eggs on rue.

I keep the fennel potted so I can transfer it to a butterfly net and shaded so it doesn't wilt. #butterfly

Some rad cats I found this past summer🐛 The blinded sphinx was on a red ninebark cultivar at work, and the copper underwing was on the native lupine in my yard. Both fabulous host plants if you love adorable caterpillars.
