Been doing some nålbindning recently. Making a scarf!

Before knitting and crocheting was invented, vikings made clothes with the technique called "nålbindning". Mostly hats and mittens. It reminds more of sewing but instead you use a big needle made out of bone, horn or wood.

It's nålbindning, which predates knitting. It's an ancient type of needle-binding. I used woven as a sort of catch-all word.

There are also several different types of stitches you can use. I'm making my scarf with the simplest one which is called the "Oslo stitch".

I really enjoy nålbindning, it's quite relaxing and I really like how it looks!

(Though you can get tight stitches with knitting as well)

That information comes from the site of the Victoria and Albert Museum, where you can learn more about not just these Egyptian socks but the distinctive, now-vanished technique used to make socks in Egypt at the time: “nålbindning, sometimes called knotless netting or single needle knitting — a technique closer to sewing than knitting,” which, as we know it, wouldn’t emerge until the eleventh century in Islamic Egypt. The technique still remains in use today.
