New preprint (well, very updated). 🤖🧠🧪

We find that an abstract model of neuromodulation lets spiking neural networks perform much better, particularly in challenging noisy environments, using less energy.

For a few years I have said that neuromorphic is specialized general purpose, like GPUs, but with different advantages.

In this preprint I try to put some substance to that claim. There are real theoretical advantages, but they aren't obvious. 🧪🧠🤖 www.arxiv.org/abs/2507.17886

It can do reasoning, but it does not reason, like a human. It cannot. Eventually, with neuromorphic engineering and quantum computing, we may get systems CLOSER to thinking like a human. But in the meantime, it IS basically a pattern extractor tool. engineering.washu.edu/news/2026/Gr...

The reason why this hasn't been made yet is because neuromorphic computing is still in its infancy. As for how the "software" is made, the best option overall is trying to "upscale" human brain activity until the simulation reacts roughly similarly to the scanned human. Nightmarish, but possible.
