#non-scientists
Just a reminder that Germany was the center of scientific progress until the Nazis suppressed, drove away, or killed all the non-Nazi scientists.

Anything scientists say must be filtered through megalomaniac non-scientists before it reaches us.
Major publishing slowdown at CDC's flagship journal: Every article submitted to Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report—MMWR—must be cleared by RFK Jr, who has no background in microbiology, public health, biostatistics, or science of any kind www.medpagetoday.com/special-repo...

Each MMWR article now requires clearance by the HHS secretary, sources said

When I'm writing characters in my novels, I will generally have scientists say "the data are" and the non-scientists say "the data is." Likewise, my non-scientists will use "strata" as a singular and "stratas" as a plural, while my scientists will use "stratum" and "strata" respectively.
In science, we have two camps:

"This data is," and
"These data are."

Because "data" is plural, but it sounds dumb to use it as a plural.

I hate the term "ethical hacker" so much.

Imagine if e.g. scientists went around clarifying that they were non-evil non-mad scientists, lest we assume otherwise by default.

In my lifetime, I've seen segments of society lose trust in evolutionary biology, climate science, and vaccines. None of this was due to anything scientists did. All of it was because non-scientists perceived some advantage (political, cultural, financial) in attacking science's credibility.

Brockman had to have INTENTIONALLY avoided inviting non-white scientists to these events where Epstein would show up because Epstein didn't believe in the intellectual equality of non-white scientists to white ones

If you're a white scientist in an all white space, ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

One of the most pernicious ideas of non scientists (politicians especially) is that scientific research can be turned on and off like a spigot without consequences.
“Why do we even plan on doing great things if, on a whim, we can just decide ‘nah’?” the senior space scientist says. “These things take a generation to build and enable multiple generations of scientists. They should not be blithely thrown away.” www.scientificamerican.com/article/nasa...

The government censoring scientists is horrific.

But what is even more horrific is that many non-government scientists and institutions are self-censoring themselves because they are scared of the government and losing funding.

Authoritarianism wins when we comply in advance!

It’s not a coincidence that every disaster movie features a scientist that remains unheard. Yes, scientists need to communicate better with non-scientists, but it would help if people tried listening.

So a research proposal could be rates as the very best by fellow scientists and then cancelled by non-scientists

.

NOAA scientists warn the agency is being pushed onto a ‘non-science trajectory’ with massive layoffs and defunding.

Climate change? Never heard of her.

Congrats this administration doesn’t even believe in science

Just guns and grifting.

This position essentially holds science hostage to the conspiracy theorists. As long as they can convince, using tools scientists have no influence over, some significant minority to believe non-scientific statements, scientists have to follow their agenda.
According to a former editor of JAMA, we need more studies on whether or not vaccines cause autism.

What mistakes does he make?

non-ironically this will only change when you go back to scientists, engineers, and economists being utopian socialists

it's also notable that historians, scientists, non-fiction authors have thrived here while journalists often *haven't*. I think there are many reasons for that that are not journalists' fault, and some that are.
Bluesky has indeed failed to replace X (like Threads has - is that also because it’s too lefty scoldy?) but it has provided a refuge and a place to disseminate without the algorithm killing our outputs.

One way that you can tell a shark scientist from a non-expert enthusiast in online discussions is that the non-expert enthusiasts will say things like "Look at that Galeocerdo cuvier! " and professional shark scientists will say "that stripey boi is chonky!"

This is why non-scientists need to stay out of science policy decisions.
The CDC changed the universal vaccine schedule & no longer recommends

Rotavirus
Hepatitis A & B
Meningitis
Influenza
RSV

I’ve cared for previously healthy kids who died from RSV, influenza and meningitis.

We all are going to be caring for a lot more now.

In our already overflowing hospitals

Yep. Here's the list of telescopes that were used to achieve the goals of NASA's DART mission, and basically every single one of them outside the USA depended on collaborations with and labor* from scientists and non-scientists who are not US residents.

*and that labor paid for by non-US sources

Reiterating my call to fellow federally-funded scientists: Call your reps, tell them how this hurts science and everything good that comes from science

(Also non-scientists, and scientists without federal funding! But the more of us who can directly speak to the impacts of these freezes the better)
The National Science Foundation cancelled over 60 grant review panels today, effectively grinding funding of new projects to a halt.

The so-far indefinite pause comes as NSF grapples with the impact Trump's executive orders will have on their grantmaking process.
