🧪🔬🦴 This is an #Osteocyte

It lives in #bone and reaches out to #implants and #biomaterials through cellular extensions [ * ]

It frequently talks to other osteocytes and orchestrates bone remodelling

Be like the Osteocyte =)

Yara went to museum collections and scanned a bunch of really old fish.

There is evidence for remodeling! How are they doing this without all the newfangled cells?! We dunno.

Cool.

Yara Haridy on Ordivician vertebrates and the origin of bone remodeling:

Synchrotron scanning tech really shines when used with tiny fossils such as those from jawless fish. This includes bony scales on the body of Astraspis.

Investigation shows bone remodeling predates osteocytes!

Stuff like this truly helps one remember the many, MANY things you need to memorize in anatomy and physiology tbh (also, hey, anybody with the right connections want to see if osteocytes inspired metroid design? Eh?)

🦴🔬#Osteocyte – the master orchestrator of #bone #remodeling. ~42 billion in the average adult human skeleton, #osteocytes make up ~90–95% of all #cells within bone, interconnected by ~3.7 trillion dendritic projections with an estimated, total end-to-end length of 175,000 km 🔍

This is thought to be the mechanism your osteocytes cue on to ramp up bone production. And external vibration at just the right frequency can drive huge changes; I’ve written about resonances before:

Neurons in your brain are also coupled—not by springs, but by electrical and chemical signals in synapses. When one neuron fires, its effect can be felt nearby in the network. And if the neuron fires repeatedly, at just the right frequency, it can produce a large effect:
