Misogyny cuts across political lines (of course it does) and the common thread is that it is overwhelmingly men who embrace it. They roll their eyes: “oh, it’s just women overreacting“. Their tone is the same: loud, long, unpunctuated sentences, so sure of themselves. They *never* pause to listen.
🧵 The fallout from the Russell Brand episode was so painful and devastating that yesterday was the first time I had commented on it publicly in 13 years. In just trying to get people to listen to women’s concerns, you would get dismissed by friends and peers, and sometimes lose them altogether.
Let me tell you about Russell Brand, as someone who helped the journalists who eventually exposed him. In 2013/4, Brand started to become interested in progressive politics. He said progressive things publicly, went on Newsnight etc. At the time I was involved in progressive grassroots work myself.
