Disney World's civil engineering: the utility tunnels that supply Disney's water, sewer, power, and gas were incredibly expensive when first built, but over time turn out to be far cheaper than digging and re-digging the ground every time an upgrade or repair is needed:

Not to slide my own whistle, but I'm really happy with this album I've been remastering. Really what I've been doing is reverse-engineering the bad production decisions, then applying my own production over what's underneath. Like re-amping an album. I do it all by hand, too; no automated analysis.

re: catastrophic blunder
- Understated, but I'll take it.
- US squanders trillions while China builds next century infrastructure, economy, and standard of living.
- If you know a little bit about engineering and large project planning, you'll understand why I say China is 100 yrs ahead of US.

Great insight here that I haven't seen mentioned before (w/r/t AI rollout). Many folks say "AI can be deployed at the speed of software" but there is lots of process re-engineering that needs to happen too.
I'm a boring optimist, there's a limiting factor on how fast technology can really change, and that frontier of change is very jagged.

at a macro level, yeah AI tools are going to revolutionize a lot of industries, just as the internet did, but I think that rollout doesn't magically accelerate

Yep. They didn't get funded the first time through so they did some re-engineering of the product and the campaign. Lowered the goal this time around and are already working with the factory for a quick turnaround.

Let alone the massive re-engineering you’d have to do to reconcile value with votes across companies with complex capitalization. It would give enormous opportunities for corrupt skimming of corporate value by control shareholders AND it would be a tax-advantaged windfall to boot
The fact is, the people who capitalize American business do not want to integrate votes with value, largely do not feel they need to integrate votes with value, and would recognize a bonanza at the expense of the fisc out of any attempt to reconcile value to votes or vice versa

Government targets delays at Master’s Office
Staff Reporter THE Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations is undertaking a business re-engineering process at the Master’s Office to identify bottlenecks and improve the turnaround time for finalising deceased estates. Minister of Justice and Labour Relations Fillemon Wise Immanuel made the announcement in the National Assembly today in response to concerns raised over the growing backlog of estates. SWAPO Party member Sharonice Davinnia Busch asked the minister about public concerns over the time taken to finalise deceased estates, describing the process as tedious and cumbersome. Busch also raised concerns about the Master’s Office’s oversight of independent estate agents involved in the finalisation of estates and asked what measures were being taken to address the situation. Immanuel acknowledged that the ministry was aware of “inordinate delays” in the finalisation of estates at the Master’s Office. He said that during the ministry’s executive management meeting on 7 September, he requested a comprehensive presentation on process mapping and business re-engineering at the office. According to Immanuel, the exercise is intended to identify bottlenecks affecting the office’s business processes and efficiency. “Once we have then identified as to where the bottlenecks are, insofar as the business and the efficiency of the office is concerned, we will be glad actually to come forward and brief this August House in terms of the reforms that we have undertaken,” he said. Immanuel said the ministry was already addressing the issue and that the business re-engineering process was aimed at improving the turnaround time for the finalisation of estates. pisses me off too. There should be a large fine (at least for most hours of the day ) for doing this. Ideally, mandated and enforced re-engineering to not wet the side path (or road) at any time. a hopeless dream though.

When Do Model Internals Help? Exploring the Role of Representation Engineering in LLM Safety
Reliable AI safeguards require both control mechanisms that reduce unsafe behavior and monitoring mechanisms that detect safety risks during model interactions. Established behavioral safeguards include alignment methods that optimize model outputs and text monitors that assess interaction text. Re…
