Admittedly this letter was published online a couple of weeks ago, but it still gave me the warm fuzzies when I found it today.

Indeed. Sigh. I didn't know about that development. You can tell I haven't led ScholComms for eight years. TBH, I'd like to write a full book on an open peer review platform, publish it on our instance of Open Monograph Press, point people to print-on-demand for nicely bound copies.

1/ Publishing debates count subscriptions, APCs, and margins. It is time to count what is invested to produce the research in the first place. A new study does just that, and a second follows the money. 🧵

👀ICYMI | "For economics, in the contemporary period, the pattern suggests the emergence of increasingly closed communities. Low entry of journals and low turnover of members raise questions about governance: Who is being excluded?"

Economics journals are governed by a shrinking elite - LSE Impact
Journal growth in economics has stalled, member turnover has collapsed, and boards have become stable and insular. Does a lack of diversity hold the field back?

Early on, typography at OLH (this journal's publisher) seemed low priority.

But scholcomms aesthetics have effects. They convey authority, permit recognition, and act as a low bar trust signal.

So we did commission new templates with a designer, a font geek, and our typesetters.
It's a very smart move for new not-for-profit journals to reclaim the typographic standards that have been lost to ruthless profit maximisation.

The issue with the reporting on this research is that "doubling every 18 months" doesn't tell us about the scale of the problem. There's a danger that research on paper mills ends up similar to the mostly terrible research on predatory publishing that assumes in advance that the problem is massive.
Science or fiction? Shadowy ‘paper mills’ let you pay to be a published author – of fraudulent research
Paper mill activity has exploded in recent years, polluting the scientific ecosystem with falsified data and compromising medical research

"The journal roughly doubled its publication volume from nearly 5,000 articles in 2023 to over 9,600 in 2024, and published over 10,300 articles in 2025."

Good illustration of why commercial publishers are not passive victims of fraudulent behaviour but have actively created the conditions for it.
Since June @elsevierconnect.bsky.social has retracted 120 papers from the journal. According to the retraction notices, the journal identified “[s]ystematic, coordinated, and widespread manipulation of the peer-review process.”
