SMPDL3B protein in ME POTENTIAL BIOMARKER / THERAPEUTIC TARGET? SMPDL3B is a protein, attached to the cell membrane, that tweaks levels of lipids (fatty/waxy substances) called sphingolipids, which are both structural components of membranes and signalling molecules. By regulating sphingolipids, SMPDL3B can affect cell communication and immune responses. A study found participants with ME had changes in SMPDL3B levels correlating with symptom severity, alongside related changes, potentially linked to immune dysfunction. Gliptin medications seemed to reduce these changes. The researchers conclude that SMPDL3B has sphingolipid potential as a biomarker for ME, reflecting disease severity and immune dysregulation.
