Hyper-optimized capitalist supplychains are extraordinarily brittle.

Supplychains, how do they work?!
seeing a lot of "higher gas prices won't affect me because I don't drive very much" and unfortunately it is my sad duty to inform you that your food does not teleport to the grocery store

I work in supplychains.

There's a 100% chance that someone has a full shipping container with 100,000 "let's go brandon" t-shirts on a ship halfway between China and LA...

Manufacturers get paid in full as soon as the container is loaded. 😂
like actual brick and mortar walk in shops for merch that was just rendered completely pointless. you just gotta believe a bunch of dweebs bought a shit load of this stuff last week and i hope some of them paid for shipping so they could get it sunday morning

Remember how when it was in opposition the govt kept saying how Jacinda was only good as a crisis leader & not a manger?

Well right now I’d like to see more crisis leadership & a lot less managerialism frankly

This is why this matters.

Not because of oil.

But because it raises a bigger question:

Who defines the conditions under which global trade is allowed to move?

Full article in comments.

grassroots supplychains move fast and take things

(to the disaster zone)
Manuscript-gesso brewers move fast and slake things*

*plaster. They slake plaster. Things = plaster
Bonito processors move fast and flake things

My niche is scaling mutual aid supply chains, but supplychains form a social network that physically connects communities!

So I've volunteered with / seen / talked to groups across the whole journey, from landings to camps to psychosocial support to cultural and economic integration.

This *IS* possible for limited durations under extreme conditions.

Early covid is one example: mutual aid efforts stocked hospitals with 3D printed face shields, hand sewn masks, and latex gloves from the local tattoo shop.

But that was a 3 month stopgap until global medical supplychains adapted.

New @bofitresearch.bsky.social Policy Brief 10/24

Are supply chain vulnerabilities increasing in the era of geoeconomic fragmentation?

So far changes in global value chains have been modest. Some near-shoring, some friend-shoring, some diversification 1/

The US has already lost 12% of its current income due to climate change. Most studies project future losses, but new research from the University of Arizona has calculated the costs to date.

Climate change's hidden price tag: a drop in our income
By linking decades of weather and income data, University of Arizona economist Derek Lemoine shows how routine temperature shifts have already become an economic force.

Would anyone be interested in short form video explainers / news analysis / mini-rants?

Topics would be related to my area of expertise: human rights, aid work, mutual aid, displacement, supplychains, open source tech, team leadership, org development, etc.

Like for yes, reskeet for hell yes.

Here are 3 things you can do to help @distributeaid.org scale up mutual aid supplychains across the US:

1. Donate. We need funding to get aid in place between now and January 20th. Every $1 donated gets $20 of aid delivered.

I'm really good at what I do because I've spent years leaning how global capitalist supplychains work and the inflection points I can exploit to make an outsized impact for our communities.

I'm not special, I've just put in the work to deeply understand a system.
THIS is why I say that you cannot dismantle a system when you don't understand how it works. There actually are pressure points within the system that, if properly leveraged, could bring it to its knees. But using them requires actual work and praxis and, yes, working within the system.

The grocery store nationalism of supply chains gets more interesting. My supermarket (Freshco) does a new flyer on Thursdays.. and anything produced in Canada or an international brand with a Canadian presence as of today now has a maple 🍁 leaf on the price sticker .

No I can't get HRT drugs. No I can't be involved in DIY HRT supplychains. Yes I can get medical supplies to people in need, who then make their own decisions on how to use them.
