Contrary to what our "fawn" response believes, approval does not necessarily equal safety.

The backflips we do to gain others' approval can actually telegraph to dangerous people that we can be manipulated-- that our addiction to approval is exploitable.

If you want to know who the bully is and who the victim is, pay attention to who stands alone. The victim is often left isolated, while the bully has a whole crowd behind them, laughing along and encouraging the behavior.

Imagine being out here saying "If you have no friends the problem is you" when... Psychology actually says that having no friends is often a survival response that happens as a result of traumatic social exclusion, covert bullying, or child abuse. And that the people most likely to be doing the harm are often surrounded by a group of enablers.

Victims/Survivors face a difficult battle when disclosing abuse because the abuser is not a monster. He is the popular all-American boy. He's the selfless "guy that'll give you the shirt off his back." He's the friendly little league coach. He's the capable Boy Scout leader. He's the successful businessman. He's the brave police officer. He's the respected elder in his church. He's the compassionate volunteer. He's the overall good guy. Disclosing abuse shatters the world's perception of the abuser, and it is often met with disbelief.
