Once again, the rush is on to get "functionality" into production without all the pesky "nonfunctional" requirements (i.e. security; compliance; risk; safety; privacy; bcdr, etc.).

Let's just create "sports cars" that go really fast...we can worry about those pesky "brakes" another time.

Agreed, and track both sides. Never true in 90 days: a dead path, retire that code path. Always true: the rollout is done, retire the flag and keep the code. Git history stays intact for audits. The dates turn "I think it's unused" into evidence, and the owner still makes the call. #TechDebt

Tech debt you can't see never gets fixed. When you're the only IT person, writing it down is step one; ranking it by business impact, not by how annoying it is to you, is step two. How do you decide what to pay down first? #TechDebt

I once had four pitch decks for the same piece of work, and none of them led with the engineering argument, because that was the one that never worked.

Tech debt belongs to the company, but the moment you promise to pay it down, it's your name on it.

The tech debt you can't fix alone
The engineering argument for paying down tech debt almost never won; what got it funded was a promise, and the promise was always in my name.

Technical debt doesn't always require a major refactoring project. Small improvements during regular development, better testing, and clear documentation can help keep software maintainable.

Technical debt isn't always bad. Some shortcuts help startups launch faster and validate ideas. The key is knowing which compromises are manageable and which could create bigger problems later.

LKML: 13,641 messages a week × ~2,100 subscribers ≈ 29M deliveries, per Ryabitsev. A 25-line patch would stop CCing it on every patch. Not just noise — Xen's maintainer catches regressions there. Archive all, alert selectively, measure first. #Linux #TechDebt

It's a complex problem that also ties into workplace culture. If you have a grindy, high-techdebt environment, AI might feels like a fresh breeze. But it is just going to make the march towards failure a run.
