At the time, a third of the senior programmers in data processing and telecomm were women. Punch cards were phasing out; tape reels were the thing. Then we went to cassettes. Our mainframes had 64K of memory. When it increased to 128K, we went to classes for a week to prepare for this new world.

Tech jobs were re-made as higher-paid men’s jobs by driving out women, Hispanics, and Black people. I can recall my shock when learning a young guy who was a network systems administrator was making $200,000 a year in 2000. The senior telecomm women I worked with in the 90s made $60,000 a year.

Not saying they should, necessarily, but it's sort of interesting that monopolies in the energy sector have never produced research labs like Bell had in the era of its telecomm monopoly. Why did Bell Labs invent the solar cell, not Duke Labs, PG&E Labs, NextEra Labs, Exelon Labs, or whatever? 🤔
Sometimes I think about how from 1935-1975ish, Bell Labs produced an insane amount of revolutionary science and technology, including 11 Nobel Prizes, the transistor, UNIX, C, the laser, the solar cell, information theory, etc. The secret? Provide scientists with ample, steady, no-strings funding.

I don't judge individuals who use Starlink when it's the only thing available, but organizations or governments who rely on it for anything "critical", and aren't pushing for investments in terrestrial infrastructure, are dumbasses who probably also think "AI" will save them too
