The problem is not that we believe we can do it.

The problem is that too many people get excited it will happen but don't do any work to make sure it does, and then they have to perform extra cynicism to get past their embarrassment at acting like they believed in something.

I think the polls are absolute bullshit because I have no idea what anyone in this country will do in the next 12 hours much less in November.

But I also am gonna run at these midterms screaming with 100% conviction that we can win.

Not that we will. But we can!

But there's a trick to that.

Sorry this is just wrong and is the logic of Jim Crow. Do we disenfranchise people in abusive relationships? What about old people in a nursing home? People getting mental health treatment? People serving in the military?
This take actually seems pretty popular on Bluesky but I don't think anyone living in a coercive environment like prison has the ability to cast a free and fair ballot.
All prisoners should have the right to vote while in prison

The entire and complete reason why Every Investment Dollar is getting poured into this genAI shit is so that they no longer have to care what you think about it

Your labor isn't needed, your spending isn't needed, your vote isn't needed, and neither is your life.

They want you as vermin.
A whole political movement should be stood up against this arrogant and sociopathic bullshit www.politico.com/newsletters/...

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job.

Think about that in context of
AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP.

Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down.

"AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago.

We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

we are watching a massive transfer of wealth during an era of massive wealth creation (however much it might be just paper money it’s powerful) — reinscribing gender during this moment is a choice about who will be a citizen for the next three hundred years.

Fact that despite the fact that someone qualifying for student loans pretty clearly shows they don’t come from generational wealth people have still been able to be negatively polarized against student loan holders because in general we have a large population of petty vituperative people.

The pundit view of the world is skewed by many things, one of which is a refusal/inability to understand geographic spaces that exist outside their own neighborhoods. It's all based on stereotypes and conjecture—even when they go to other places, and their columns are essentially bad travel writing.

Stray thought:

A lot of USA political/pundit discourse seems like it's based on a second-ring suburban point of view.

It's based on inaccurate stereotypes about demographics and everyday life in cities AND small towns AND the working-class, first-ring suburbs found in many metro areas.

I’ve seen dunks on this, pro and con. Both are fine, whatever.

I’m just out here to say that I can’t imagine having this kind of free time to leisurely pursue one-on-ones to preserve the culture of civility or what have you.

That is all.
The best cure for ideological bias is find someone on the other side and go to lunch with them.⁣

It turns a state duty into a popularity contest: the person with the most compelling story gets protection, while everyone else gets treated as a harder case to justify.

i remain so alarmed by all the discourse about how people can use AI to get good deals / fight wage theft / counteract extractive insurance practices that doesn’t acknowledge that — if you accept this works — the companies on the other side … also can use it to do the opposite?
Bizarrely, this is one of the six graphs illustrating "just how much we need A.I.".
