PLEASE STOP MAKING UGLY GENERIC GODOT UI! This ends now.

I made a (quick) crash course on setting up modular Godot UI. It covers theming, behaviour, layout and UI composition.

Neat breakdown of damage reduction math in RPGs: youtube.com/shorts/IzHAj...

A lot of games with multiple units and less "progression" choose to use a simpler approach (see Starcraft, Fire Emblem, XCom) -- probably because you're likely to have SOME unit who can do damage.

Autoloads are a huge convenience in #Godot -- but as games get bigger, they can become a huge mess. Allow me to sketch out an alternative, where scope hierarchical, transitionable contexts

Coding with AI isn't useless, but if you lean on AI as you learn to code, you won't develop the muscle to solve the hard problems AI can't solve.

also it's fun to learn

New Zelda remake looks fine, but I have almost no desire to replay Ocarina. The real fun was the wonder as a kid figuring stuff out. It's never occurred to me to play through again after knowing how it works. I'd probably get it for a kid I wanted to introduce to the genre though, I guess.

One of the most satisfying things in game dev (and all programming) is when you're adding a new feature and it ends up being easy because you designed something to be flexible a long time ago even though you didn't have a particular reason to at the time.

Thought I'd do a quick thread of a few things that I got up to this year. First: I wrote a weird manifesto about game design, making games for fun and love, and why no-one is going to pay you to do that. This remains one of the silliest/most rewarding things I've ever done.

This is perfectly valid code you can write in your game:

Anyone have favourite software for making YouTube thumbnails? My workflow is generally around filtering and compositing existing owned images and laying out text. I've been using Krita and it's FINE but the UX really sucks. Photoshop is good, but really dislike a sub model.
