"The rich are only defeated when running for their lives." - CLR James, The Black Jacobins

Such an argument might be justified if a supermajority requirement had been in place (typically 60% but often higher). Without it, the referendum lacked enduring constitutional legitimacy (and could therefore ckaim to stop democratic process). What a pr*ck was Cameron: all foreseeable...
This is just the maddest argument. These people would trap us in poverty to keep a decade old commitment, which no one ever actually made, to an electorate which no longer exists.

A patriot speaks out on behalf of all of us.
Trump is interrupted by a protester in Mississippi:

"Shove that ballroom up your fat ass!"
The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.
House Judiciary Democrats have just released a 50-page report that pulls together years of assault allegations against Trump and his reported connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

The report calls for a special counsel to investigate Trump's ties to Epstein.
House Judiciary Democrats release 50-page report on Trump’s alleged involvement in Epstein files
The report — issued just eight days before the election — makes multiple, uncorroborated allegations against the president while also detailing discrepancies in his statements about Epstein.

Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro.
It's a loss for Trump.
For Musk.
For Milei.
For Netanyahu.
For Farage.
For Meta and Zuckerberg.
For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters.
And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.

I am I right to hate the phrase (let us not) 'relitigate Brexit'. Came in via the BBC, but is a legal not a political term. Is it because use of the legal term deligitimises political debate around the issue?

Suspect Taylor may lose out to Habermas as hero of the antifascist turn: it's the 'rule of law' what won it (Brazilian Supreme Court). Not sure myself, can't help but feel law has also been guilty of de-democratisation (usurping politics). Hum, too complex 4 first tranche of books in any case.

Seem to have memories of listening to him 20 odd years ago on Radio4 around economic issues, and thinking, no, this is all a bit too accepting of business narratives. Although he was sane then....

Hungary, Brazil, Serbia. Maybe people are tiring of the shallowness and belligerent exploitation of the postmodern post-truth demagogues. Perhaps Charles Taylor was on to something in his case for the retrieval of the ethical ideal underlying Enlightenment liberalism (The Ethics of Authenticity)

Ja, er sollte wirklich vor Scham im Boden versinken. Es ist unfassbar peinlich.

Didn't Justin Webb used to be one of the not-mad ones?

And his cynical NI giveaway? Surely the most fiscally regressive act of a Chancellor since WWII, and a major headache in view of the care crisis. And yet, here he is, still viewed as a credible commentator. For shame.

Doesn’t matter how you voted if you were front and centre in a Brexit government, actively overseeing the shrinking of our economy, our influence and our opportunities, while you rolled around in the trough.
We’ll be disregarding everything you now say, thanks.
Victory for Lula, who has already reduced Amazon deforestation by 70% since 2022, means there is now a chance of ending deforestation of the rainforest entirely

None of us should forget this. Meta should be subjected to corporate death penalty and permanently broken up into small pieces.
I will not forget that Zuckerberg and Facebook shut down the accounts of the most popular presidential candidate in one of the largest democracies in the world, and he was elected anyway

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.
In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day.

Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.
It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
