President Donald Trump threatened the European Union with very high tariffs if it deepened ties with Canada, calling proposals for an "associate membership" "ridiculous."

Trump responds to the prospect of Canada being an associate member of the EU by threatening tariffs on the EU - as always, echoing the behaviour of bullies/domestic abusers. Obviously this shows contempt for his "deal" with the EU, and if he did it the EU can retaliate.

Back to Trump’s threats over the proposed “associate membership” for Canada overnight, France’s Europe minister Benjamin Haddad said in response that the EU has no power to veto EU’s geopolitical choices.
“It is not up to the United States – or anyone else – to choose the political and geopolitical direction of the Europeans. The geopolitical holiday for the EU is long over. Von der Leyen should have known that offering a closer partnership to Canada will be seen as a threat for a US President that claims imperial control over the Western Hemisphere.

The geopolitical holiday for the EU is long over. Von der Leyen should have known that offering a closer partnership to Canada will be seen as a threat for a US President that claims imperial control over the Western Hemisphere.
Of course he would, and it shows that an agreement with Canada is exactly the right thing to do. And of course the EU should be unbiased by the usual bully tantrums.
