Trump responds to the prospect of Canada being an associate member of the EU by threatening tariffs on the EU - as always, echoing the behaviour of bullies/domestic abusers. Obviously this shows contempt for his "deal" with the EU, and if he did it the EU can retaliate.

Back to Trump’s threats over the proposed “associate membership” for Canada overnight, France’s Europe minister Benjamin Haddad said in response that the EU has no power to veto EU’s geopolitical choices.
“It is not up to the United States – or anyone else – to choose the political and geopolitical direction of the Europeans. The geopolitical holiday for the EU is long over. Von der Leyen should have known that offering a closer partnership to Canada will be seen as a threat for a US President that claims imperial control over the Western Hemisphere.
The European Commission replies to Trump:
"As our President made clear yesterday, the proposed strengthening of our partnership with Canada is not against anyone else, but for our common strength."

Whereas we in Europe often underestimate the power of the EU, remember Putin started the first aggression against Ukraine, including the annexation of Crimea, in response to the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement in 2014:

Post-Trump US trade policy is going to be a big battle. Not sure where we will end up.
So I was chatting with a college mate whom I also went to grad school with (both universities Stateside), and talking about the EU “associate member” proposal.
His $0.02? “You know that once Trump is gone, almost all Americans will be fine going back to the older arrangements, right?”
