A series of cyberattacks have targeted refrigeration systems in supermarkets across several European countries, including Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Estonia. The incidents, occurring less than a month after a similar attack affected hundreds of supermarkets in France, have caused temperatures in fridges and freezers to rise sharply, leading to spoiled food and significant financial losses. In Ireland, SuperValu, the country's third-largest supermarket chain, reported that 13 of its 223 stores were affected by a cyber incident involving a specific refrigerator model, resulting in the removal of chilled and frozen products from sale. Swedish stores operated by ICA and Co-op experienced similar issues, with freezer temperatures reaching 50°C overnight. Belgian and Luxembourgish stores under Ahold Delhaize also faced disruptions, with Carrefour reporting 15 out of 700 stores in Belgium affected and five Spar stores under Colruyt Group impacted. IKEA's Belgium outlet was also affected, though more locations could be at risk. Danish company Danfoss confirmed 17 Dutch stores were impacted, while Estonian supermarkets reported temperatures soaring to 50°C. The attacks, which have prompted criminal investigations in Belgium, highlight vulnerabilities in connected retail infrastructure. Cybersecurity experts note that retail chains are particularly vulnerable due to their extensive use of remote-controlled refrigeration systems, building management systems, and point-of-sale equipment. The EU Food Commissioner emphasized the need for supply chains to withstand cyber threats, while researchers suggest these attacks may be politically motivated or part of sabotage efforts, given the lack of financial demands typically seen in extortion attacks. Authorities have not identified the perpetrators, though the timing coincides with heightened concerns about hybrid attacks following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Retailers have reported significant losses, with one Belgian butcher estimating €15,000 in ruined meat products. The incidents underscore the growing risks of cyber threats to critical infrastructure in the retail sector.
