National #Stuttering Acceptance Week is May 12-18

#RAW is on so thought I’d share my experience meeting #Bayley @ #SummerSlam Axxess 2019

I showed the 2 words where I stuttered below 👇👇

She did the RIGHT thing, maintained eye contact & had a normal facial expression

Meant a lot to me 🥺

Distancing yourself from the #disability community, when you’re obviously disabled or a person with a disability IS caused by #ableism & internalized ableism

I’ve seen this frequently in the #stuttering community & the #ADHD community

#InternalizedAbleism #StutteringAwareness #StammeringAwareness
What #ableism and internalized ableism looks like:

You don’t call yourself “disabled” or a “person with a disability” even though it fits the definition under the law

You don’t call yourself disabled or a PWD even though your “condition” affects the way you live, decisions, job opportunities, etc

Wonderful to hang out today with John Hendrickson, author of "Life on Delay," a milestone book about #stuttering. Great guy, too.

Today is International #Stuttering Awareness Day.

My speech impediment is a part of who I am. I'm grateful to those who value what I have to say and approach me with kindness and patience in my moments of disfluency.

If you're in #gamedev and could use support, reach out. You're not alone. 💚

#Neurodivergent people have brains that work differently, so #stuttering definitely fits!

Everyday proved quite the chore
Frustration just to talk
Girls and boys would roll their eyes
Heck some would turn and walk
Instead of being quiet though
Just the opposite occurred

Why did I bring up that topic in a #Stuttering group?

Not only because it’s true that stuttering is a form of #neurodivergence, but also:

EVERYONE benefits when we work TOGETHER for #accessibility / awareness / #inclusion / #accommodations / advocacy, rather than distancing ourselves & “othering”
Another example of this:

A few years ago I posted in #Stuttering groups about stuttering being a form of #neurodivergence

Some ppl who stutter were resistant, even though stuttering fits the definition of ND (stuttering is neurological)

They knew abt “those” ND ppl & wanted to distance themselves
For those reading COVID informed / immunocompromised people’s posts abt #LongCOVID & thinking “that’ll never happen to me” or “that’s something for THOSE ppl to worry about”

This is a form of #ableism bc you subconsciously / consciously want to distance yourself from disabled / chronically ill ppl

Proud to have contributed to this international research project into the #genetic causes of #stuttering.

Felt emotional sharing my family tree & wondering which of my ancestors also had a stutter like me. I know about my cousin Chris & possibly my uncle Peter. Perhaps even my mother. #ancestry
Did you know that the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering and Wayne State University are working together to find the genes for developmental stammering? 🧬

Delighted that from March 2026 children with #ssd (including #CAS) #stuttering or #cleft will get an extended Australian Medicare benefit - an additional (?) 20 sessions and 8 assessment sessions. Not enough by a long shot but an excellent start. Well done Speech Pathology Australia!
