#Kallikrein

The @Norrislab at MUSC unveiled their genetic finding in June 2024 behind some #hEDS patients: a Kallikrein gene. (Not a collegen defect!) Still needs peer review, but it may explain some comorbidities too:

Given its function, damaging the ECM= not great. You'll see a lot re: kallikrein and cancer, because of the ECM's connection to cellular proliferation and ultimate cellular fate. Some think kallikrein-15 is related to metastasis in cancer. (6/3) #SciSky 🧪

This is a pretty big deal: a huge team of researchers found a gene associated with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome! Up to now, other kinds of EDS have been associated with genetic mutations, but not hEDS, the most common kind of EDS. (1/3)

Reminder to those of us with #hEDS:
You can add this paper to your medical folder to ward off ignorant physicians who argue that hEDS is unlike other forms of EDS because the gene hasn't been found and it's therefore a bit more "all in your head."

A recent study shows that the Kallikrein-related peptidase 13 (KLK13) can also cleave the spike protein - but instead of activating it, KLK13 inactivates spike.
In animal models, recombinant KLK13 reduces viral spread, suggesting a potential protective effect.
