Whenever depression hit me like a ton of bricks throughout my life, libraries were my solace and the place that could bring me out of crushing darkness. Wandering aisles of books gave me hope. Bringing home a stack of books gave my brain something to do instead of wallowing. Libraries save lives!

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests.

We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason.

I'm living proof of why public libraries matter.

Born to a teen mum, I was raised by my gran who worked as a cleaner. Single-parent household. Dysfunctional family context with substance abuse, petty theft, and unemployment.

Home life was chaotic despite my gran's best efforts.

Our library is facing a $5M budget cut b/c the county voted against funding. I'm absolutely gutted! I can't even count the numerous ways my children's lives have been enriched by our branches. Jobs lost, new books nonexistent, programs gone. Such a vital part of our community.
